About Northern Light . Douglas Yates Photography
I'm a photographer and writer who watches water freeze in Alaska. My perch in the boreal forest is a few miles south of Fairbanks and several hundred feet below the summit of Ester Dome.
I make photographs for the pleasures that come with discovery and to record my surveys. Moving across the landscape using human power (bicycles to shanks' mare) adds dimensions of adventure and independence to the process. Sharing the object of the experience is a vital incentive.

Courtesy of the U.S. Marine Corps, the first professional camera I learned to operate was an 8x10 Deardorff. The 12-pound light-capture device, plus its 5-ft.-long mahogany tripod, provided a foundation in the skills of observation. Subsequently, I worked in photo and television production studios, directed a university media lab, and edited a regional newspaper. I now work independently as a communications consultant.
